Kathak is one of the eight major classical dance forms of India, originating from North India. The word Kathak comes from Katha meaning “story,” and Kathakar meaning “storyteller.” Traditionally, it was performed by wandering bards who narrated mythological and devotional stories through expressive dance. Kathak is known for its intricate footwork (tatkar), fast spins (chakkars), graceful movements, and expressive gestures (abhinaya). It blends elements of both Hindu temple traditions and Mughal court culture, making it a unique classical art form. Today, Kathak is performed on stage worldwide as both a traditional and contemporary dance.
