Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form that originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu, India. It is known for its intricate footwork, graceful movements, and expressive storytelling through hand gestures (mudras) and facial expressions (abhinaya). Bharatanatyam follows a structured format, including components like Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Varnam, and Tillana, performed to Carnatic music. Traditionally a temple dance, it has evolved into a widely practiced stage art. A practitioner of Bharatanatyam is called a Bharatanatyam dancer or Natyam artist.
