Kerala Natanam is a classical dance form of Kerala that evolved as a simplified and modern adaptation of Kathakali. It was developed by Guru Gopinath in the 20th century to make classical dance more accessible to the general public. Unlike Kathakali, which uses elaborate costumes and is mostly performed in temples or traditional theatres, Kerala Natanam is performed with simpler costumes and lighter makeup while still retaining the mudras (hand gestures), facial expressions, and rhythmic movements of classical dance. It draws its themes from mythology, social issues, and modern stories, making it a versatile art form suitable for stage performances.
