Margamkali is a traditional Christian folk dance of Kerala, mainly performed by the Syrian Christian community. The word Margam means “path” or “way,” referring to the path of Christ, and Kali means “dance.” It is usually performed by a group of women, dressed in white chatta and mundu, dancing in a circle around a traditional lamp (Nilavilakku). The performance is accompanied by clapping of hands, rhythmic songs, and graceful steps. The songs narrate the life and teachings of St. Thomas, the apostle believed to have brought Christianity to Kerala. Margamkali is both devotional and cultural, performed during festivals, weddings, and community gatherings.
