Veena is a classical stringed instrument of India, considered one of the oldest musical instruments in Indian culture. It has a large resonating body, a long neck with frets, and usually 4–7 main strings along with sympathetic strings. Veena is commonly used in Carnatic music (South Indian classical music) and sometimes in Hindustani music (North Indian classical music). It produces melodious and resonant tones that are ideal for both solo performances and accompaniment in vocal music. The instrument is played by plucking the strings with fingers, while the left hand presses the strings on the frets to produce different notes. Veena is also closely associated with Goddess Saraswati, the deity of learning and arts.
